A new ICD-10 Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) code set took effect October 1, 2023. In this new code set, there are many code additions, deletions, and modifications. Below is a list of some of the changes that may be more pertinent to Intellicure users.
Prior to 10-1-23, D48.1 (Neoplasm of uncertain behavior of connective and other soft tissue) was a complete ICD-10 code. Starting 10-1-23, D48.1- is no longer a complete ICD-10 code and requires additional characters. The new code options are:
D48.11- Desmoid tumor
- D48.110 Desmoid tumor of head and neck
- D48.111 Desmoid tumor of chest wall
- D48.112 Desmoid tumor, intrathoracic
- D48.113 Desmoid tumor of abdominal wall
- D48.114 Desmoid tumor, intraabdominal
- D48.115 Desmoid tumor of upper extremity and shoulder girdle
- D48.116 Desmoid tumor of lower extremity and pelvic girdle

Throughout all of the D57- Sickle-cell codes “vasoocclusive” changed to “vaso-occlusive.”
Prior to 10-1-23, E20.8 (Other hypoparathyroidism) was a complete ICD-10 code. Starting 10-1-23, E20.8- is no longer a complete ICD-10 code and requires additional characters. The new code options are:
E20.81- Hypoparathyroidism due to impaired parathyroid hormone secretion
- E20.810 Autosomal dominant hypocalcemia
- E20.811 Secondary hypoparathyroidismin diseases classified elsewhere

I87.2 Venous insufficiency (chronic) (peripheral) carries a new instruction to “Use Additional code, if applicable, to specify site and severity of ulcer (L97.-)”

Prior to 10-1-23, Z91.A4 (Caregiver’s other noncompliance with patient’s medication regimen) was a complete ICD-10 code. Starting 10-1-23, Z91.A4- is no longer a complete ICD-10 code and requires additional characters. The new code options are:
- Z91.A41 Caregiver’s other noncompliance with patient’s medication regimen due to financial hardship
- Z91.A48 Caregiver’s other noncompliance with patient’s medication regimen for other reason
Prior to 10-1-23, Z91.A9 (Caregiver’s noncompliance with patient’s other medical treatment and regimen) was a complete ICD-10 code. Starting 10-1-23, Z91.A9- is no longer a complete ICD-10 code and requires additional characters. The new code options are:
- Z91.A91 Caregiver’s noncompliance with patient’s other medical treatment and regimen due to financial hardship
- Z91.A98 Caregiver’s noncompliance with patient’s other medical treatment and regimen for other reason
Conclusion
These changes became effective October 1, 2023 and all providers of all types should be using the new ICD-10-CM code set now.
